WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Pleads Guilty to Publishing US Cable

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has pleaded guilty to a single charge of publishing US cable.

In March 2010, a member of WikiLeaks using the handle Ox, widely believed to be Julian Assange, talked to Chelsea Manning by text chat while she was serving in the US Army. Manning provided Assange with classified information, which WikiLeaks later published.

The US government charged Assange with 18 counts of espionage and one count of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion. However, Assange has agreed to plead guilty to a single felony count of illegally obtaining and disclosing classified information.

In exchange for his guilty plea, the US government has agreed to drop the remaining charges against Assange. He could face up to five years in prison.

Assange is currently out on bail in the UK. He is scheduled to be sentenced in the US on January 25, 2021.
